Professor John O’Byrne, Prof. John O’Byrne has a very busy clinical practice as a Consultant Orthopedic surgeon. Over the last 25 years he has operated in several Dublin hospitals including the National Orthopedic Hospital, the Mater Private Hospital, the Sports Surgery Clinic Santry, the Bon Secours Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. He is currently the Clinical Director for Adult services in the National Orthopaedic Hospital and is a former President of the Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. Prof. O’Byrne is the Abraham Colles Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and has responsibility for teaching undergraduate medical students and training postgraduate Orthopaedic surgical trainees. He has developed and directed several Masters programs in RCSI. Prof. O’Byrne has published four textbooks and over 150 peer-reviewed publications. He is the co-recipient of multimillion euro research grants looking predominantly at cartilage regeneration. Prof. O’Byrne was the Honorary Orthopaedic Surgeon to the Ireland senior soccer team from 2004 to 2024. He has been Chairman of the Olympic Science and Medicine Committee for Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024.
Professor Fergal Malone, Professor and Chair, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences. Professor Malone is a graduate of UCD School of Medicine, followed by obstetrics & gynaecology and maternal-fetal medicine training at Tufts University/New England Medicine Centre, Boston. He was subsequently appointed consultant obstetrician-gynaecologist, initially in Boston, and later Director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Columbia University Medical Centre, New York. He was appointed Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at RCSI in 2005, as well as consultant obstetrician-gynaecologist and sub-specialist in maternal-fetal medicine at the Rotunda Hospital Dublin. He has directed major multicentre research programmes in the US and in Ireland, as well as being responsible for the development of a national fetal surgery/therapy programme from the Rotunda. More recently, he was Master / CEO of the Rotunda Hospital from 2016 until 2022, during which time he was responsible for growing the Rotunda into the busiest obstetric and gynaecologic hospital in Ireland. He has more than 20 years’ experience as a medico-legal expert, including extensive Courtroom testimony.

Michael is a junior counsel of almost 20 years’ experience practicing in Dublin. As a longstanding member of the State Claims Agency panel and having also acted on behalf of Plaintiffs in medical negligence claims, he is well positioned to provide the conference with an update on all the recent jurisprudence in the area.
