Judge Nolan was chairperson of the Bar Council from 2012 to 2014. He was educated at University College Dublin and the King’s Inns, called to the Bar in 1985 and the Inner Bar in 2003. He was appointed as a High Court Judge in 2023.

 

“The Changing landscape of Personal Injury Resolution”

With Professor Jean O’Sullivan

Professor Jean O’Sullivan is currently a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Tallaght Hospital and is Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at Trinity College Dublin.  In 2003 Prof O’Sullivan was awarded a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and in the same year was awarded the Membership Examination in Accident and Emergency Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 2004 she was awarded Membership of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. Prof O’Sullivan became a Fellow of the College of Emergency Medicine, London in 2008 and in 2012 successfully completed a Diploma in Forensic and Medico-Legal Medicine at University College Dublin. In 2008 Prof O’Sullivan founded an international charity, Global Emergency Care Skills and has worked extensively throughout Africa. In 2021 Prof O’Sullivan was awarded the William Rutherford Humanitarian Award by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and in 2024 the International Federation for Emergency Medicine Humanitarian Award.  Prof O’Sullivan is a member of the Medicolegal Society of Ireland and has worked as a medico-legal expert since 2008. In 2018 she was appointed to the Board of the Injuries Resolution Board. Professor O’Sullivan is Chair of the UN Global Surgery Learning platform and is an advisor to the WHO Acute Care Action Network.

Derry Hand is a barrister, practising in the area of tort and personal injuries, medical negligence, company and commercial law. Derry specialises in the area of legal costs and legal costs adjudication/taxation. He regularly appears before the legal costs adjudicators in costs disputes, and in statutory reviews of taxation/adjudication before the Circuit Court and High Court. He represents the interests of both solicitors and clients in legal practitioner and own client matters. He has been instructed in many of the most important costs cases in recent times, including the seminal decision of the Supreme Court in Sheehan v. Corr.
