Employment Case Law Update, Des Ryan BL

Des Ryan BL will analyse several recent significant cases, including developments concerning: parallel proceedings in employment litigation – new guidance from the Supreme Court; suspensions, fair procedures and injunctions; considerations when conducting employment investigations in the context of parallel criminal proceedings; recent judicial guidance concerning employment settlement agreements; Supreme Court case watch – pending decisions in employment equality and unfair dismissal.

Flexible and Remote Working in Ireland – Practical Guidance for Employers further to the recent WRC Code of Practice, Siobhan Lafferty

The Workplace Relations Commission has recently published its Code of Practice for Employers and Employees on the Right to Request Flexible Working and Right to Request Remote Working.  Siobhán will consider the similarities and differences between the right to flexible work and remote work and a comparison with the relevant UK legislation on flexible working.  Siobhán will outline some practical tips for employers in dealing with requests and discuss what new policies should look like.

Law Firms and the Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) Challenge, Joy-Tendai Kangere BL

Joy-Tendai Kangere BL will provide a practical overview of this recent Directive, as well as considering/focusing on how the ‘S’ and ‘G’ raise regulatory compliance issues for law firms.

Speakers:

Des Ryan BL – Des is a practising Barrister specialising in employment law. He has many years of experience acting for both employer and employee clients whom he advises on all aspects of employment law. He regularly appears before the WRC and the Labour Court as well as before the Superior Courts. He is an Associate Professor and Fellow at Trinity College, Dublin and is very experienced in lecturing in employment law and related areas. He has contributed to a number of publications concerning employment law and is the author of the latest edition of Redmond on Dismissal. He regularly gives CPD lectures to colleagues in both the solicitors and barristers/ professions, to the judiciary and to human resources professionals.

Siobhán Lafferty – Siobhán is a Senior Associate in the employment law team in LK Shields Solicitors LLP and has a range of experience in both contentious and non-contentious employment matters.  She regularly advises both employer and employee clients on issues arising from the beginning to the end of the employment relationship, regularly representing clients before the Workplace Relations Commission and in High Court proceedings.

Joy-Tendai Kangere BL– Joy-Tendai is a Barrister with a civil practice specialising in Employment Law. She is a Denham Fellow and studied at the Honorable King’s Inns. Joy-Tendai is a public speaker, writer, columnist and lectures in Employment law and Equity and Trusts in University College Dublin (UCD) and Dublin City University (DCU).  She regularly contributes to topics on social inclusion, justice, equity and leadership inspired by the African principle of Ubuntu (I am because we are) which speaks to community, unity, respect, and dignity. Joy-Tendai has recently contributed to ‘Reunion: Leadership and the Longing to Belong’ a book by author, leadership and life-coach, Jerry Colonna.

CHAIR – Ciara O’Kennedy, Partner in the Employment, Pensions and Employee Benefits Team in LK Shields Solicitors LLP, has extensive experience advising on all aspects of contentious and non-contentious employment law matters.  Ciara is the Chair of the DSBA Employment Committee and is a regular speaker at employment events.
