CHAIR – Mr Justice Paul Burns
Welcome and Introduction
The Hon. Mr. Justice Paul Burns has served as a Judge of The High Court since March 2020. He previously practised as a barrister, specialising in defamation cases, criminal trials, judicial reviews and constitutional law matters. Mr. Justice Burns is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and a former member of the Electronic Communications Panel. He is also Chair of the Education Committee 2024 of the Judicial Bencher’s Panel.

Declan Doyle S.C.
Prosecuting Defamation Claims: The Plaintiff’s Perspective
Declan is one of the most accomplished Senior Counsel practising in the area of defamation. He has represented clients in all of the major defamation trials over the last two decades.
Declan was called to the Bar in 1982 and admitted to the Inner Bar in 2001. He will speak on the challenges of prosecuting defamation claims from the Plaintiff’s perspective.

Ted Harding S.C.
Defending Defamation Claims: The Defendant’s Perspective
Ted Harding S.C. is a Senior Counsel, having been called to the Inner Bar in 2021. He specialises in regulatory, commercial and media law. He also practices in the areas of professional negligence litigation, data protection, judicial review and insolvency matters. Ted is a graduate of TCD, the Honourable Society of King’s Inns and UCD and is an Accredited Mediator. He is a former editor of The Sunday Business Post and broadcaster. Ted also holds a professional qualification in accounting and finance from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Ted will focus on defending defamation claims from the Defendant’s perspective.

Mark Finan B.L.
Defamation and GDPR: Recent Developments
Mark is a practising barrister specialising in data protection law, professional negligence and regulatory law. Mark is a graduate from the University of Oxford and the Honourable Society of King’s Inns. He was called to the Bar in 2005 and has subsequently completed a Master’s degrees from DCU in Data Protection and Privacy and Ethics (Corporate Responsibility). Mark will speak on recent developments concerning the GDPR claims and the overlap between those claims and Defamation law.
