The Dublin Solicitors Bar Association (DSBA) has reiterated its support for meaningful engagement between the Department of Justice and the legal profession following the implementation of the new Criminal Legal Aid fee structure.

DSBA President Paul Ryan said:

“The DSBA recognises the significant work undertaken by the Law Society of Ireland in representing the profession’s concerns regarding the new Criminal Legal Aid fee structure. We support its continued engagement with the Department of Justice and believe that meaningful consultation remains essential.

This debate is about more than solicitors’ fees. It is about access to justice. The people most affected by these reforms are often among the most vulnerable in our society, including children, people living with serious mental health difficulties, and others whose circumstances require time, patience and effective legal representation at some of the most difficult moments in their lives.

Our members, many of whom practise daily in the District Court, know that criminal cases do not follow a standard template. They vary significantly in complexity, duration and the level of preparation and professional responsibility they require.

Reform of the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme is both necessary and welcome. However, lasting reform should be evidence-based, developed through genuine engagement with those who deliver the system every day, and directed towards maintaining an efficient, sustainable and properly functioning criminal justice system.

The DSBA remains committed to working constructively with the Law Society, the Department of Justice and all stakeholders to achieve those shared objectives in the interests of the effective administration of justice and the rule of law.”
