SPEAKERS

Maria Dillon is a Solicitor with Horan & Son Solicitors, Woodquay, Galway. She has considerable experience in Wardship, Inherent Jurisdiction, Health & Social Care law, and the law relating to Vulnerable Adults & Children. She is a Chairperson of Mental Health Tribunals, and a Member of the Law Society Mental Health and Capacity Task Force

Dr. Bernadette Brady is a Consultant in Palliative Medicine in St. James’s Hospital and Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services, Harold’s Cross. She is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and also holds a PhD from UCD. She undertook her Palliative Medicine training in Ireland & Uganda. She has a particular interest in Healthcare Ethics & Medical Law, with an MSc (RCSI) in Healthcare Ethics & Law, and an Advanced Diploma in Medical Law (King’s Inns). She regularly facilitates Ethics training for medical trainees for the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland with legal colleagues.

Emma Slattery BL is a practising barrister specialising in capacity law and the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act. Emma is the author of the Assisted Decision-Making Handbook (Bloomsbury, 2024). Called to the Bar of Ireland in 2013 and the Bar of England and Wales in 2018, Emma is also a CEDR qualified mediator. She is also member of Bar Council’s Human Rights Committee and IHREC’s Specialist Human Rights Law panel of barristers 

 

Marie-Claire Butler was appointed General Solicitor in the Office of the General Solicitor Minors and Wards of Court in July 2024 where she has worked for almost 9 years. Marie-Claire has extensive experience in deprivation of liberty, minors, elder abuse cases and the representation of persons who are placed outside the jurisdiction for specialist treatment. Marie-Claire has a particular interest in eating disorder cases, and cases involving complex psychiatric issues. Marie-Claire is currently leading the review and transition of Wards of Court from Wardship (where the General Solicitor is Committee) to the new ADM(C)A regime.

Chairperson

Katharine Kelleher BCL LL.M is a Partner at Comyn Kelleher Tobin LLP. She has particular expertise in the area of wardship, mental health, assisted decision making, adoption and inherent jurisdiction applications involving sensitive and complex health care issues. She is a committee member of the Dublin Solicitors Bar Association (DSBA) Mental Health Capacity Committee.
