CHAIR – Patricia Hickey

Patricia was recently appointed to the position of County Registrar. Prior to this appointment she was the General Solicitor for Minors and Wards of Court for 9 years and was a Senior Solicitor in the Office of the General Solicitor for 10 years. Before specialising in the areas of Elder Law, Vulnerable Adults and Minors and Wardship and Mental Health Law she worked as a solicitor, in general practice.

Hugh Guidera B.L.  

Dealing with Unmeritorious Claims: Recent Developments

Hugh Guidera BL is a practicing barrister with a broad civil practice, specialising in Public Law. Hugh also acts for both plaintiff and defendant in employment and personal injuries matters. He is the lecturer in Constitutional Law on the Law Society’s Diploma in Law course,and was the researcher for Delaney and McGrath on Civil Procedure (5th ed., 2024). He is a law graduate of Trinity College Dublin and the University of Cambridge and has practiced at the Bar since 2020.

Elizabeth Corcoran B.L.

Banking and Commercial Litigation Update

Dr Elizabeth Corcoran BL practices in commercial, chancery and administrative law, specialising in banking and financial services. Elizabeth acts for and advises a wide range of financial institutions, the State and statutory bodies, and private customers and companies in litigation and regulatory matters, including professional disciplinary proceedings. She also practices in inherent jurisdiction and wardship matters in the context of detention and compulsory treatment orders for persons lacking capacity.

Elizabeth is the co-author of Banking Law (4th ed) with John Breslin SC. She completed her doctoral research on the interplay between financial regulation and equity in 2017. Elizabeth is a founding member and Treasurer of the Financial Services Bar Association.

Dermot B Cahill S.C

A new landscape for the assessment of damages in personal injury cases post Delaney v Personal Injury Assessment Board & Ors.

Dermot B Cahill SC is a Senior Counsel with a broad civil practice, specializing in insolvency, tax and personal injury.  Dermot was originally called to the Bar in 1998, and the Inner Bar in 2021. He is a member of the Irish Tax Institute, and has acted for a wide range of private, commercial, and state parties. Dermot was originally instructed as Junior Counsel and on being called to the inner bar, Senior Counsel in the Landmark case of ‘Brigid Delaney v Personal Injury Assessment Board & Ors’, a Supreme Court Challenge to the introduction of the Personal Injury Guidelines , where the Court held by a majority that although section 7(2)(g) of the Judicial Council Act, 2019 was unconstitutional, the subsequent ratification of the guidelines by the Oireachtas in the passing of section 30 of the Family leave and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 2021 rendered those guidelines lawful and binding upon the Courts and PIAB in the assessment of damages.
