Lump Sums Awards, Interim Payments and Periodic Payment Orders: An Update.
William Reidy BL will explore the current position in terms of the mode of award available to parties in catastrophic injury cases following the decision in Hegarty v Health Service Executive. It will assess the benefits and disadvantages of proceeding by way of lump sum and/or interim payment and explore the current position on Periodic Payment Orders.
William is a practicing barrister and member of the Bar of Ireland. He was called to the Bar in 2008 and specialises in personal injuries and medical negligence law. William acts for both plaintiff and defendant clients, including the HSE, in all areas of clinical negligence claims, including catastrophic injury, misdiagnosis, wrongful death, sepsis/infection and nervous shock claims.
The Journey from Accident to New Normal
Mr. Mark Mulrooney Mr. Mark Mulrooney is a Principal Specialist Clinical Neuropsychologist working in Beaumont Hospital. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate education in UCD, completing further postgraduate training in Glasgow University in Neuropsychology.
He works as part of the Neuropsychology Department in Beaumont Hospital, having providing care to Neurological and Neurosurgical patients for 14 years. His previous roles have included working with people with Intellectual Disabilities with most of the major service providers in Dublin and prior to that, working in Canada for 6 years.
His main professional interests include supporting patients with Epilepsy and Brain Tumours. He also has an ongoing clinic supporting patients with Tourette’s Syndrome.

Avril Scally is a Partner and Head of Medical Negligence and Personal Injury at Lavelle Partners. She specialises in complex medical negligence claims and is vastly experienced in areas like cancer misdiagnosis, delayed diagnosis, the CervicalCheck screening controversy, obstetric negligence, wrongful birth, nerve damage, negligent care, and surgical negligence.
